Opened in the 1970s, this family-run grooming business has expanded over the years to become an institution in Calgary. In addition to grooming, The Barking Lot is Calgary’s home for all-natural pet foods, expert advice and pet supplies.
The business began as a small grooming operation based out of Joanne Burns’ home. It outgrew that building and moved a couple of times before settling in its present location in Midnapore in 1992. In 2003 the Burns family sold the shop to a husband and wife team in 2003 and it continues to be family-run, as the couple's son handles the day-to-day business. “My folks are both veterinarians,” says Rodrigo Campos. “So it’s been everything animal-related in my family for decades now.”
Much of the staff have stayed through the decades at The Barking Lot and are happy to provide expert advice on caring for your pet. “Our customers are looking to us for guidance and advice,” notes Rodrigo. “You want to find out about allergies or underlying health issues before suggesting a product. First you have to get a good picture of what’s going on at home before you can recommend something.”
