“When it comes to self-defense, there are no rules, only results,” says Lori, owner of Pacific Wave Jiu-jitsu. “If you teach a competition style, you may be limited by the rule set you’re following.” For Lori, Jiu-jitsu has always been first and foremost about self-defense. It’s the foundation of her teachings at Pacific Wave Jiu-Jitsu, but she also realizes the additional benefits of physical discipline.
“Some people find it boring just to do straight fitness training,” she says, “with something like Jiu-jitsu, they can become fit and have fun learning a new skill at the same time.” Martial arts provide an excellent physical and mental workout, demanding practice, discipline and exertion while building practical self-defense skills.
