These days, a walk down Vancouver’s busy Main Street corridor will bring you past a variety of second-hand clothing stores. But back in 2002, C’est La Vie was one of the only shops in the neighbourhood offering quality consignment and vintage fashions. The owner of the trendy, hot-pink boutique is Faustine Faure, a Paris-born fashionista who moved to BC and fell in love with the world of consignment and vintage North American style.

“I always loved vintage,” she says, recalling her days in Paris where she worked for years in antiques, vintage stores and flea markets — or “friperies” as they’re called in France. When she arrived in Vancouver, the concept of consignment was new and exciting. She got right on board and became a consigner at several local shops.

When she finally opened her own boutique, Faustine wanted the business to reflect her French roots. “I wanted to find a French name,” she remembers. And it’s not just the brand that keeps those cultural ties strong. The shop’s selection of new and vintage clothes, all hand-picked by Faustine herself, is eclectic and elegant — exactly the style you’d expect to see in a boutique in the City of Love. “I go to France a lot to get inspired and to see friends and family, and I actually buy and bring back some unique items,” she says.

Stay away from this store! They take your items and tell you they will call you and never do, then they donate your items or put them for sale without your knowledge. Half of my expensive items were donated and the other half sold at low prices I would have never agreed to. When I spoke to the owner about this she continually yelled at me and told me this is how she has done business for 15 years. She clearly has lost all compassion for people and their valuable items after so many years of work

As a personal assistant I took several bags of clothing in the this store for my boss. I was told I would receive a call in a few days about the clothing. After not receiving a call I call the store only to find out that the clothing had been "donated" without letting me know! The owner refused to tell me where the items were sent (so I could attampt to retrieve them) or to take any responsibility for the loss. This is definitely not a place I would recommend.

Hello Beverley, I am very sorry about this incident and I suspect there must have been a technological/communication error as we ensure we reply all our consignors diligently. On average it will takes a week for us to process the items as we receive a lot of consignors and sometimes I need the time to decide if your consigning items are too similar to my current stock of clothing. Once I have reached a decision, I will call you to pick up any ineligible items or sign a contract and our deadline to pick up any rejected items is one week. I express regret for any technological error that may have occurred and invite you to bring any consigning items you may have in the future. Thank you Beverley.
