Vancouver is a seafood lover's paradise; the coastal city is home to numerous restaurants that excel when it comes to delivering delicious, sustainable seafood dishes. Located inside the luxurious Four Seasons Hotel VancouverYEW Seafood + Bar stands out from the crowd.

First opened in 2007, YEW is favourite among modern millennials, boomers and the city’s movers and shakers. The upscale dining room attracts world traveler and locals who are looking for a memorable evening of fine food and wine, with a good dose of ambience. However, diners need not be intimidated by the chic downtown postal code; tailored jeans and a sharp shirt will pass YEW’s smart-casual dress code.

“Even though YEW is in a gorgeous hotel, it feels like you are taken away to a vibrant and sexy hotspot,” explains general manager Mark Hofbauer. “What also separates us from other restaurants is that we have staff who have been with us for 25+ years.”

As its tree-inspired name suggests, the 300-seat restaurant pays homage to the stunning beauty of the West Coast, with plenty of rich wood and rock elements throughout the interior. YEW’s bar is one of the longest in the city, and a seat here guarantees great people watching. The interior's pièce de résistance is a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace that separates the lounge from the dining room. Stunning decor and attentive service aside, it’s the innovative cuisine that keeps people coming back.

Great Atmosphere

It was my anniversary week-end so my wife and I decided to try out the YEW Restaurant at the Four Seasons hotel. We generally don't go to such fancy places, but I purchased a two for one deal on Travelzoo a while ago and we thought this would be the perfect opportunity to use it. When you first walk into the restaurant you can't help but be overwhelmed by the atmosphere. It has a bright, large layout with an open kitchen concept and an amazingly modern feel to it. A lot of fancy restaurants that I have been to in the past are very stuffy and pretentious, but this place is the exact opposite. Since we went for brunch, we had to choose from the 3 course fixed price menu. Basically you get to pick one appetizer (plenty of traditional breakfast plates and seafood options), one main course (once again lots of options) and three desserts that come in small portion sized dishes. Unfortunately, our waitress brought us the wrong appetizers, but it was quickly corrected and we were given the incorrect appies free of charge. The main courses were excellent and we both enjoyed them thoroughly. Unfortunately because of the extra apples we were too full to eat dessert but we saw them being served to other tables and they looked fantastic. Overall, this has been one of the best dining out experiences we have had in Vancouver. It is definitely a must-do.

After experiencing a number of blah restaurants...

After experiencing a number of blah restaurants with blah food with blah waitresses ... I finally have one that hit the spot!!! My drink was a Margarita.. I chose it randomly without looking at the menu, but the waitress assured me it was 'best in the city' and it was really quite strong and potent, but in a good way. A very good way. She mentioned something about how it had 2 shots of expensive liquor, for a cheap price, but I'm not really a liquor expert (I drink beer). I started with two types of oysters and they were quite possibly the best I've had! They come with four unique dipping sauces with long names that I don't remember.. sour vinaigrattes and spicy calypso sauces.. all very yum. Then I had the $35 Sunday night set menu. I opted for the poached pear and beet salad, with beet sauce. It was very uniquely flavored, had a bit of coarse salt sprinkled on it too I think. Very savory. The 'veal' dish I chose over the 'venison' dish because the waiter said it was more tender. This was the one dish I did not like though. It was basically a big bowl of underseasoned pasta, with tiny shredded veal bits here n there. It tasted too much like... underseasoned stew. The only good thing was some kind of small sour things in it.. capers, maybe? After being disappointed by the veal dish, I was happy again with the dessert.. soooooooo happy!!! Passionfruit mousse (with some liquor-drenched cake hidden on the inside) with sorbet. It was VERY intensely and tartly flavoured, just the way I loveeeee dessert to be. Had a bite of the homemade fudge ice cream and it was good too. Another friend's seared scallops with foam looked great, maybe I will try next time. The service was very pleasant. Our waitress took all the pics we wanted for us and our main waitress was rather humorous. He even suggested we go to the private wine bar room in the centre of the restaurant so he could take our pics there! Service a bit slow, but apparently that's to be expected here? One thing I was NOT happy with was the hostess (not her looks which were A-OK). I asked on the phone and also asked the hostess that seated us in a very detailed manner, if she could please note that one of the last two guests who were to arrive at our table was not aware that this was a surprise dinner planned for her, and that the reservation would be under a different name for her, so as to not ruin the surprise. The hostess nodded attentively, smiled a lot and assured us she would help us out with our plan and bring these last two guests to our table when they mentioned the alternative name. But she completely forgot to pass on the message to the other hostess (even though the restaurant wasn't that busy), who ended up bringing in our friends. So the second hostess told our friends the reservation did not exist and it was a bit awkward, as our friends wandered around looking for us. Details like that make a lot of difference between a 4 star and a 5 star restaurant. But to be fair, that same hostess that forgot that detail also noticed my friend was holding his valet ticket as I was looking for my coat check tag, and offered to call them for us so his car would be waiting outside when we got out there. Anyway, the food was overall great, we got the complimentary truffles at the end, the west coast interior design with its emphasis on nature, wood, trees, stone, and bold structure was also great, and I already am thinking about going back sometime soon!
