Dads are a tricky bunch to thank. What do you get them? A card? Socks? A firm handshake? While those are good options, how about you treat him to a darn good steak instead? [Image credit: iStock.com/Lisovskaya]

4810 Calgary Trail NW, Edmonton AB T6H 5H5

If the name alone doesn’t scream “Dad,” the menu certainly will – it has an entire page dedicated to steaks. A whole page! Oh, and sauces and sides and surf options and, oh God, your mouth is watering. There’s no shortage of beer and hard liquor, either. Plus, your dad will feel right at home with the cozy atmosphere, complete with a fireplace.

Vons Steak House & Oyster Bar

101-10065 Jasper Ave Nw, Edmonton AB T5J 1S5

Well-known for its oyster-shucking (a buck a shuck most of the week), Vons also makes a mean steak anyway you like it, with a reasonable variety of cuts and abundance of sides. Oh, and to help the conversation along, there’s a swath of drinks, including a bacon caesar. That counts as a vegetable, right?

Acme Meat Market Ltd

9570 76 Ave NW, Edmonton AB T6C 0K2

Your dad put a little bit of work into you, so why not put a little work into his steak? Even if he’s picky about his cuts, ACME will make it happen. Warm up the barbecue, then swing by and grab a nice striploin, rib eye, rib steak or – well, seriously, there’s so much to choose from, why not just stop by? There’s a reason everyone in town raves about ACME.

Ruth's Chris Steak House

9990 Jasper Ave NW, Edmonton AB T5J 1P7

Yeah, it ain’t cheap, but neither was raising your ungrateful butt (or so I’m told). With great service and no shortage of melt-in-your-mouth cuts, this chain has been a favourite of dads and salesmen impressing clients for years. Just a heads up, though: Book ahead.

Treat your dad to some local awesomeness, with food sourced from farms within a reasonable distance of Edmonton. The menu constantly changes, but you can always rely on quality, original concoctions with flavours that reflect just how darn fresh everything is. And, the drinks? There’s enough beer and hard liquor combos to make the old man happy. It’s “Range” Road, by the way, not “Rage.”

Post-workout meals need two things: Carbs and protein. While that may seem a bit limiting at first glance, Edmonton has several awesome, healthy options for when you’re still wiping sweat away.
Not every Dad is Ron Swanson; some don’t do the meat thing, and that’s awesome. Whatever his reason – maybe he’s a huge fan of George Stroumboulopoulos and follows anything he does – thank him for being your dad by taking him out for an awesome meal. [Image credit: iStock.com/Lauri Patterson]
Getting gifts for guys is a gargantuan task - we’re not always upfront about what we want and often happy with pretty well anything. A blank slate can be intimidating. Good thing Edmonton has plenty of places to find perfect presents for dudes.
