Here's my report, straight up. I did not write this out of haste. If your livelihood is based on taking my money, serving me below average food, in a below average atmosphere and treating me with zero respect, this is the sort of review you will receive. I have read the reviews on this site that swear by this place as the best Chinese eatery in the North. Unfortunately I'm not convinced; I suppose I tend to hold the bar a little higher than others. But given what I pay for and that I'm putting their product into my body, meeting the bar is the least I expect. INTERIOR: -The place is cramped, furniture is old and my table was wobblier than a dreidel on a tight rope. -The bathroom was very dirty; I used a napkin to open the door. -The overall interior of the restaurant needs to be renovated; cobwebs and dust were stuck to the mobiles and lanterns that hang from the ceiling. SERVICE: -Wait time was over 45 minutes from the time we arrived to the time we were served - this is absolutely unacceptable. -It seemed like there was an endless flow of takeaway orders that left the kitchen before our order was even taken. Make the Rickshaw come to you! -It was 30 minutes before our order was taken by the server. There is no excuse for this, there were only two other tables that had patrons. -Our server could barely speak English and had a hard time understanding what we were trying to order. One of the patrons requested chocolate milk, this required great effort on our part to request, and in the end we settled for a soft drink. -If you are a 'SERVER' in Canada, you should be able to speak at least one of the official languages. It's the least one could ask for. Otherwise, don't be working customer service. FOOD: -I ordered the SHRIMP COMBO. -First item was the deep fried shrimp roll, I only got two of them, and they were smaller than my thumb. -The main entre - Shrimp fried rice - the rice was typical brown fried rice, but lacked in shrimp and any decent flavour. -The deep fried battered shrimp were good, but not enough of them. -Fried shrimp with veggies - Something was off with the shrimp, they had a slight essence of sewage. Way too many vegetables with the entre, I was not impressed and overall I was very disappointed. BILLING: -Our bill was not itemized - some of us like to know what we are being charged without having to do the guess work. It was mostly chicken scratch with a total at the bottom.
Rickshaw has absolutely the best Chinese food north of Toronto city limits. The food is delicious, perfectly spiced, fresh and hot. The portions are huge. The service is always friendly and attentive. The place is clean. The decor is authentic small-town - lots of fun.
For a small restaurant on the main strip my visits have been pleasureable. I have ordered food on several occaisions (all eat-in) and have not had any complaints. The food has been flavourful and the staff friendly. They don't hang over your table but they are there when needed. The atmosphere is dated but well worth the money spent.
I have eaten here many times and have yet to have the smallest complaint. The food, regardless of which item is ordered , is always hot, fresh and served in a timely manner. I find they go out of their way to please their customers. The restaurant is always spotless and if you enjoy Chinese food, I highly recommend The Rickshaw
Have visited Rickshaws quite a few times and found the Chinese food to be pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty good! Prices are reasonable. But would it kill them to occasionally clean their washrooms, or run a squeegee over both sides of their front windows?
Recently, this place has become an essential part of my Gravenhurst experience, only recently discovered, though I've been visiting for about 15 years or more. Some folks reviewing this restaurant have dissed the decor, but who cares? The service is good, the gal who serves us is always the same, and the food is excellent whether it's eat in or take out/delivery! The chicken balls are larger than any I've seen anywhere and they are 95% chicken! Yum! I've not tried the other Chinese restaurant in town because I can't bring myself to NOT visit the Rickshaw when I'm there!
Been there about 10 times now as we fell in love with there wonton soup. They also have the largest chicken balls ever. Trust me and try it when in Gravenhurst.
We were head to North Bay for the weekend and knew we would be at Gravenhurst for dinner so I checked Restaurantica for a Chinese restaurant recommendation and end up here. Since there was just the two of us, we each ordered a combo plate. Very large servings. Everything was very good. The chicken balls were excellent....lots of chicken and very little breading. Service was okay -- not great. Wait staff were also taking phone orders. Place really needs to be renovated.
went there last long weekend based on a recommendation by a neighbour at the cottage. While the service was comparable to any family type restaurant, the food was subpar. The Chicken balls were over done and the sauce was very bland. The Canton chow mein was alright but nothing to write home about. The honey garlic ribs were TERRIBLE! Tasted like they just poured a bunch of soya sauce in the pot and called it honey garlic. I'll be going back to the other chinese place at the north end of town.
AMAZING food.Best in town. totally visit again.all i'm going to say
Have visited at least a dozen times (since new ownership took over) and food is always tremendous. I am surprised by the visitor who had a low-rated dining experience. Though the decor is not four-star, the food is always consistently excellent. Pork and beef dishes always excellent, and general's chicken superb.
Great Service, lovely waitress and the food was fresh, tasty and just fantastic! Will try to stop here on a regular basis on the way further up north.
Food was amazing and fantastic, best chinese i ever had in a while.
Friendly service, food was served fast and hot, food was of good quality and quantity, vegetables fresh as was the neat, very tasty, would recommend this place highly to anyone travelling in the area.
ALWAYS friendly service, fresh food and quality just getting better with each visit. The owner's work hard and are trying to build the business... difficult in this town where it is so busy in summer and quiet in winter. Slowly upgrading facilities... recommended highly.
Food was horrible, I didn't know you could screw up Sweet and Sour sauce like that. Rice and soup were bland, good spring rolls and OK crab claws. Overall very disappointing.
I love places like this and they are getting harder to find. I'm sure to visit every time I am in Gravenhurst. The food is typical 'Canadian' Chinese, but is fresh and hot. The service is fast and friendly.
A little greasy. But the Sunday Dim Sum was passable. The inside is overdue for a make-over. Deco is circa 1977, but not in a cool retro way. Although, staff is very nice, family run
